Character description: The Captain of the Guard is a stern, no-nonsense character responsible for enforcing Lord Farquaad's strict rules. Loyal to Farquaad, he leads the effort to banish fairy-tale creatures from the kingdom, showing a militaristic dedication to his duty. Although the Captain doesn’t have extensive dialogue, he plays a key role in advancing Farquaad’s plot by rounding up and overseeing the exile of the fairy-tale characters to Shrek’s swamp.

The Captain’s character is often portrayed with a comical edge, blending seriousness with exaggerated loyalty to Farquaad, which helps to highlight the absurdity of Farquaad’s strict, superficial ideals. His interactions with the fairy-tale characters show him as an obstacle to their freedom, adding to the tension in the story. Though primarily a supporting role, the Captain of the Guard enhances the musical’s themes of prejudice and exclusion, reinforcing the message that people (or creatures) should not be judged based on appearance or societal expectations.
